Research Infrastructure

RIUM was a directly approved project under the call of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, Science and Innovation (now Ministry of Education, Science and Youth). The project pursued the overarching vision of international competitiveness of research, innovations, and technological development, in line with the fields of the Smart Specialization Strategy of Slovenia (S4).

Through investment in the upgrading of research infrastructure (RIUM), the project created conditions for the use of state-of-the-art scientific research equipment under the principle of open access for university and other researchers. The investment aimed to support high-quality research, increase cooperation in research and development projects, and promote the broader development of specialised expertise by ensuring the wide availability of the research infrastructure for educational and training purposes in the following primary research areas:

Advanced Materials and Technologies;
Health and Safe Food;
Smart Energy and Circular Systems.

Key project information:

Project title: Upgrading national research infrastructures − RIUM.
Co-funding in the amount of EUR 28.864.416,31 with an 80% contribution of the European Union’s contribution from the European Regional Development Fund and a 20% contribution from the Slovenian Ministry of Education, Science and Youth.
Project implementation period: 1 October 2019 to 30 September 2023.

As part of the project, research infrastructure was upgraded in areas with breakthrough potential that support the development of knowledge relevant to the further development of the University of Maribor. At the same time, it became evident that researchers’ needs for modern scientific research equipment exceed the currently available capacities. Further upgrading of the research infrastructure is therefore planned within the framework of the RIUM 2 investment project, for which an application has already been submitted.
