Dear students! A warm welcome to the University of Maribor as we begin a new academic year!

A special greeting goes to you, our first-year students: today you embark on a journey that will shape you not only as professionals but also as individuals who will help create the future of our society.

Albert Einstein once said: “Education is not the learning of facts, but it is a training of mind to think”. This is the essence of a university, not merely to provide knowledge, but to broaden horizons, foster creativity, and a critical view of the world.

For more than half a century, the University of Maribor has proven that knowledge is the greatest power. Our graduates are doctors, engineers, teachers, artists, scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs who are changing the world around them. You are now stepping into this tradition and with your ideas, you will help elevate it further.

Studying is not just about collecting information. It is above all the ability to think, to ask questions, and to seek answers which is usually not easy. This requires courage! But therein lies the beauty of the academic path: in the awareness that curiosity opens doors to innovation, progress, and compassionate understanding of the world.

Today, 1 October, is also the International Day of Older Persons. It reminds us that knowledge gains true value when it is shared across generations. Young people bring energy and new ideas, while older generations offer experience and wisdom. Only together can we build a sustainable, compassionate, and long-living society capable of facing the challenges of the future. Let the university be a place where we learn not only from one another, but also for one another. As an old Indian proverb says: “The elderly have roots, the young have wings”. In this balance lies the strength of society. Learning from experience and drawing courage for the future from youth.
