In 2018, the UM successfully obtained co-financing for high performance computer infrastructure as the leading partner of the consortium of the project Upgrading national research infrastructures – HPC RIVR in cooperation with the Institute of Information Science, Maribor and the Faculty of information studies in Novo Mesto. Establishment of the national supercomputing centre provides Slovenian researchers and industry with the latest supercomputer technology, thereby significantly increasing the competitiveness of Slovenia in international markets and in science. The investment aims to open new fields of research and develop new services that follow and help to shape global trends. Computing capacities are available for research, development activities and education in accordance with the principle of open access.

HPC RIVR is a directly approved project in response to a call by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. The project follows a horizontally oriented objective of the international competitiveness of research, innovation and technological development, in line with the Slovenian Smart Specialization Strategy (S4) and the objectives of the European declaration on High Performance Computing.
