Postgraduate Studies

Faculties of the University of Maribor offer and carry out postgraduate study programmes in compliance with the Bologna declaration (2nd degree - master and 3rd degree - doctoral study programmes).
 
All postgraduate study programmes are evaluated with ECTS points. At graduation, postgraduate students receive a diploma supplement as diploma’s component part, used by students as their study report and study achievements, when searching for employment. A diploma supplement is issued in Slovene and in one of official EU languages.
 
 
NUMBER OF STUDENTS, ENROLLED INTO POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMMES
 
Since academic year 1997/1998 the University’s of Maribor Department for Education and Study Affairs gathers information on students’ enrollment in University of Maribor postgraduate study programmes.
 
The following table shows a contrasting growth of number of students, enrolled into the first year of studies till academic year 2004/2005 and a slight decrease after that. In the years 2005/06-2012/13 the number of students is rising sharply, but there are about 5 % of students, enrolled into the first year of postgraduate study programmes in academic year 2013/14 less than in a previous year. In the academic year 2016/2017 there are 1549 students, enroled into the first year of master's and PhD study programmes at the university, which is about 2,5 % less than in a previous year. 
 
Legend for data in the table above:
SPEC – Specialist Study Programme, 2nd degree – Bologna Study Programme leading to Masters, PhD. – Study Programmes leading to PhD, 3rd degree – Bologna Postgraduate Study Programmes leading to PhD Since the academic year 2009/10 the old study programmes (SPEC, MASTER and old PhD) are not carried out anymore. Students had the time to finish old study programmes until September 30th 2016.
 
 
NEW POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMMES, in compliance with the Bologna declaration
 
New study programmes are certified with Higher Education Act from year 2004 and are in compliance with the Bologna declaration. New and modernized study programmes were introduced from academic year 2005/2006 on for PhD and from the academic year 2006/07 for Master.
 
New postgraduate study programmes are 2nd degree study programmes (Masters) and 3rd degree study programmes (PhD).
 
 
2nd DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMMES
 
 
2nd degree study programmes enable students’ to deepen their knowledge about wider professional fields, qualify for enquiry of new knowledge sources on professional and scientific fields, use of scientific research methods in a wider problem spectrum. They also enable engaging of responsibility in leading pretentious work systems and development of social and communicative abilities for team work. An obligatory component part of these programmes are projects in work environment or fundamental, developmental research projects.
 
Enrolment conditions for 2nd degree study programmes are:
  • 1st degree study programmes of appropriate professional field,
  • 1st degree study programmes of other professional fields, if candidates, before enrollment, finish study obligations, essential for study continuation; these study obligations are set according to candidate’s professional field of his 1st degree study and is evaluated with 10 to 60 credit points. A candidate can achieve those credit points during his 1st degree study, with programmes for advanced study courses or by passing exams prior enrollment in a Masters study programme,
  • professionally orientated study programmes, accepted before June 11th 2004 of appropriate professional field, professionally orientated study programmes, accepted before June 11th 2004 of other professional fields, if the candidate passes study obligations before study programme enrolment, that are essential for study continuation and is in range between 10 and 60 ECTS credit points.
 
Considering Regulations for transition between study programmes, enrolment in 2nd degree study programmes is possible for:
  • graduates of academic study programmes, accepted before June 11th 2004 of appropriate professional field. At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme,
  • graduates of academic study programmes, accepted before June 11th 2004 of other professional field. At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme
  • candidates who completed a professionally orientated study programme and a specialist study of appropriate professional field. At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme,
  • candidates who completed a professionally orientated study programme and a specialist study of other professional field. At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme.

A Masters study programme can set certain talents, psychophysical abilities or adequate work experience as enrollment conditions.
 
 
3rd DEGREE STUDY PROGRAMMES
 
3rd degree study programmes enable students’ deeper understanding of theoretical, methodological concepts, ability for independent development of new knowledge and salvation of most exacting problems with proving and improving known and discovering new solutions, leading pretentious work systems and scientific research methods from professional and scientific fields. An obligatory component part of these programmes are fundamental or developmental research projects.
 
Enrolment conditions for 3rd degree study programmes are:
  • 2nd degree study programmes,
  • academic study programmes accepted before June 11th 2004
  • professionally orientated study programme, accepted before June 11th 2004 and a specialist study. Study obligations are defined before enrolment in range between 30-60 ECTS credit points, set by the study programme. 
 
Study programmes for professions, arranged by EU directives or other uniform Masters study programmes for other professions in the Republic of Slovenia, with 300 credit points and which last 5 years.
 
Considering Regulations for transition between study programmes, enrolment in 3nd degree study programmes is possible for candidates who completed:
  • a Masters study programme, accepted before June 11th 2004. At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme
  • an Academic study programme, accepted before June 11th 2004 and specialist study.
 
At enrolment certain amound of ECTS credit points recognized is set by the study programme.
